Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio came into office in 2021 with a vision for a “new form of capitalism.”
The 5-year plan calls for increasing the amount of investment by 10x and the number of startups by 10x.
Problem
“Unfortunately current investment in R&D by Japanese Companies is far less than that of other developed countries. The same goes for capital investment.
We need to present a clear national strategy, and national growth-rate targets, and then act as a priming agent to induce corporate investment.”
SOLUTION
Increase connections between VCs in US and Japan, via online and in-person events in Tokyo and Silicon Valley. Create connections between VCs, LPs, corporations, and government.
CONNECTIONS
Brainstorm policy, programs, and events to increase cross-border investment in US-JPN funds and companies. Launch NIPPONnovation conference in Tokyo (October 2023), with followup events in Silicon Valley and Japan in 2024 and beyond.

EDUCATION
Educate VCs and LPs on opportunities to invest in funds and startups. Present best practices for VC fund creation and investing. Educate government on policy and incentives to spur entrepreneurship and investment. Share case studies on successful US-JPN cross-border IPOs and acqs.
Create specific policy and programs for investors in VC funds (both JPN and US) to drive growth of Japan startups, IPOs, and acquisitions. Focus on incentives for Govt, Corp, LPs to invest in early-stage VC fund managers and startups.
